Choosing your perfect dress
There is a perfect wedding dress for every bride, all you need to do is find it. But where should you start and how much might your dream dress cost? Get some answers from the Easy Guide to Buying your Wedding Dress and find tips on shopping for one here at Wedding Whispers. We update our site and magazine all year round to bring you the latest styles and designers in store. It is tempting however to fall for massive savings that can be found on the internet and on seemingly beautiful dresses by reputable designers. Brides please beware here as the dress you might be tempted to buy may not look anything like the image, the quality will be poor and your vision of standing aside your beloved in your perfect dress shattered in an instant. Don't fall for unscrupulous online traders who prey, yes prey, on unsuspecting brides, go instead to a reputable bridal shop where you can try your precious wedding dress on and get the full service. There's plenty to choose from and one will be yours.
See the new issue of Wedding Whispers for a glimpse of this season's styles and price guide.

Back to back weddings
We are not often blessed with perfect backs, such a relief then that some of our favourite dress designers have got this covered! This season's wedding dress styles are elegant and feminine with the view from the back showing intricate lace detail, sheer fabrics with pretty buttons and with covered shoulders or not. Teamed with loosely styled hair or a sophisicated chignon. Just the ticket then for feeling super confident at the top of the aisle.

Our thanks for the gorgeous front cover courtesy of the photo shoot organised by Linda Grace Weddings and Alistair Jones of Ideal Imaging who were ably assisted by a cast of lovely wedding services at Maunsel House in October. We were both inspired and ever so slightly potty with the idea of country gardens, flowers, pastels and Beatrix Potter. Read all about this and more inside the new spring issue of Wedding Whispers.

Brides, please be continue to be aware that there are unscrupulous 'internet traders' that claim to sell designer labels at a reduced cost when in fact that they are mostly ripping off designs and bridal designers from bridal sites and manufacturers who trade in the UK.
Wedding Whispers support Brides Aware, the campaign by Bonny Bridal UK to alert brides to the fact that designer/wedding dresses bought online from an internet trader may not be what they seem. UK Brides should also know that most bridal shops in the UK nearly always have sample wedding dresses at reduced prices and will give you a fitting and alteration service if required. So if you are looking for a bargain you really don't have to take a risk with buying from the internet. Wedding Whispers also lists discounted sample sale wedding dresses around Bristol and Somerset on The Dress List so you can find out where they are and try and buy that day. It's easy!
If you need to know much you can expect to pay for your wedding dress and who stocks what before you start shopping, go to the 'Easy Guide to Finding Your Wedding Dress' in the current issue of Wedding Whispers. Marriage Ceremonies - The Options!
In England and Wales there are two main forms of marriage ceremony, a religious/faith service and a civil ceremony or partnership which can either take place in the Register Office or a venue approved for conducting Civil Ceremonies. Since 1995 the popular choice of using a wedding venue for the marriage ceremony has overtaken those in a Church or Religious building. It is now estimated that 2/3rds of all marriages in England and Wales are civil, most likely due to the many options and beautiful locations to hold both the ceremony, wedding party and a place to crash afterwards! A civil ceremony/partnership can be conducted only in an approved venue and one that meets with the requirements of the local Registrar where no religous content or references are permitted. From 29th March 2014 same-sex weddings can now be conducted in England and Wales, but check local conditions as these will vary according to faith e.g. The Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, the Muslim Council of Great Britain and The Network of Sikh Organisations have apposed plans to allow gay marriage.
An unusual and lesser know option is that of using the services of an Independent Civil Celebrant who can offer the option of choosing your own readings and vows and have a ceremony in a place of your choosing, in front of family and friends, even on a beach at sunset. These services are arranged at a time after the legal formalities of marriage have been conducted in front of a Registrar at a Register Office and which could be the same day or some time after. For some sound advice and information, have a look at south-west based Sarah Chapman, Independent Civil Celebrant, for some ideas at www.celebrationceremoniessouthwest.com

It's our Birthday!
Wedding Whispers celebrates its 8th birthday this month. When we think back to when we created the magazine and website in 2005, we don't think we have changed much; our aim then as it is now, was to make it easier for busy couples to put their wedding together and to show you where you could find the services to help your dream come true. Wedding services do however change all the time and we have found this to be so and we update our website and magazine with new services on a regular basis, so that at the time you are ready to buy, the information you need will be at your fingertips. Our aim then as it is now, was to be a short and easy read in a free magazine that featured up to date wedding services, and to be a starting point of inspiration for your special day. We do not aspire to have every wedding idea on the planet, but just how exhausting is wading through hundreds of pages each and every month? The thought of it makes us want to go to sleep too! Just a few ideas are all it takes to provide that spark of inspiration and move towards your vision not ours.
There have been many changes in the industry since we started in 2005 and which now give couples more choice than ever before; wedding venues or Approved Premises in many beautiful locations are the choice of almost 100,000 couples in the UK, overtaking that of a religious marriage in a church, the Civil Partnership Act became law in December 2005 giving same sex couples over the age of 16 the right to form a legal union, and when it comes to style and location, just about anything goes, the traditional Saturday wedding can now be any day of the week! And now more than 50,000 couples travel from the UK each year to get married in locations abroad.
We see many changes in the variety of wedding services around the south west, wedding shows are just about everywhere, Blogs, Facebook and Twitter seem to have overtaken traditional media of print and owning a website. Or have they, and is this where the business of putting a wedding together is done? We don't entirely think so, especially not the couples we meet at shows and events around the region, who just want to make a start, be pointed in the right direction, pick up a magazine to find ideas and someone you can actually talk to about one of the most special days of your life.
It's easy to create a page, write a blog, find new followers and friends, set up a website and a table at a wedding show. But we know print still has a vital and consistent presence alongside this new and fast media, so we make more copies of our free magazine available through our network, and with an easy download online Wedding Whispers is as popular today as it was when we launched it in 2005, and the search for information via www.wedding-whispers.co.uk remains as bouyant as ever. It is a long term business backed up by a dedicated commitment, and whilst we are indeed featured on Blogs, Facebook and Twitter and attend shows to meet new couples, we believe that service in this industry is that of being ever present, keeping up and being consistent for the benefit of our readers. We thank you for being with us and we hope that in some small way we will make your wedding a pleasure.

Your South West Wedding Starts Here!
We are always delighted to publish a new issue of Wedding Whispers with updated services to make it easy for brides to organise their own weddings. We use our experience and knowledge to bring you a selection of south west wedding services that are updated for each issue. Whether you live in the south west or are planning to host your wedding here, you'll find it's so much easier to get what you are looking for! The July to December issue is online now and is available in outlets and Register Offices around the south west. The 'dress' is of course the main focus for the bride and our dress shops are all owned and managed by ladies of considerable experience and if you are looking for a discounted wedding dress you'll get to know where you can find one on our popular Dress List on this site. We feature new styles and designer wedding dress collections coming into store and take a peek at the dresses coming in for 2014. Lace detail is still such a winner but the big news is that sleeves and bodices are very much in vogue, short dresses are perfect for informal weddings and 50's vintage styles and the romance of the '20's just never went away with glamorous dresses and beaded detail adding a touch of elegance. In the new issue of Wedding Whispers, we also update our regular feature 'The Easy Guide' along with a price range for each bridal shop to help you to plan your budget.
One of the most important items on the 'to do' list is finding a suitable wedding venue that ticks all the boxes for size, location and of course price. There's no shortage of beautiful wedding venues and it's easy to get discounts for booking midweek and 'out of season' weddings if you ask. Take a look at the new issue of Wedding Whispers to find details of great packages and winter wedding offers from Woodlands Country House Hotel, Brent Knoll, The Winter Gardens Weston super Mare and Old Down Manor in Tockington. South Gloucestershire to see just how easy it is to book a fabulous venue for less than you think! Compton House in Axbridge is great for planning short term and intimate weddings and you can book this venue just for the ceremony, followed by drinks and canapes on the terrace and get exclusive use as well. The Oak Barn in Devon is an idyllic location set in several acres of woodland and the bridal suite is included in the 'no strings' hire fee for the venue. If you like the city, then look no further than the stylish Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel on College Green where a range of packages are on offer from just £49.99 per person.
We've got all the accessories you need as well, inspirational florists, table decorations, candy buffets, chair covers and natural confetti, hair and make up artists, genuine vintage cars, wedding rings and vintage jewellery and of course experienced photographers who work around the south west. If you are looking for something different for your evening entertainment take a look at Boogie Avenue, a fresh vibrant dance and vocal group with sounds of the 60's, 70's and 80's or for something very different, Bravo Singing Waiters spring the surprise with their fun act at the wedding reception.
To meet some southwest suppliers come and see us at Taunton Racecourse on Sunday 1st September 2013 at The Wedding and Fine Events Show where the ever popular Bridal Lounge will be open to try and buy wedding dresses on the day!
Our congratulations and we wish you happy days planning your south west wedding with the help of Wedding Whispers.

Wedding Dress Trends for 2013
We like to keep brides informed about anything new in bridal and especially for the all important wedding dress. Bridal fashion has a 'season', and twice a year new and upcoming collections are unveiled at the International Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate, and is where UK bridal shops go to make their buying decisons for their shops. The collections on show often reflect who and what is currently influencing the fashion world in the UK and around the globe. Last year's Royal Wedding and Kate's timeless lace creation by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, continues to make a big impact on dress designers here and abroad. Lace detail is still a favourite, vintage styling is in vogue, sleeves and straps are making a comeback, but the strapless wedding gown is still the popular choice for many UK brides, and the romantic era of the twenties just never seems to go out of fashion!
South West bridal shops were busy at the International Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate earlier this month and have been thoughtful in adding to their current collections in store in time for the 2013 season. Bridal shops often have years of experience in dressing brides, and understand the nature of offering their clients desirable creations so choose their collections and designers with care. Susan Hinckley of Parham House Brides in Dunster is delighted to be a new stockist of beautiful vintage inspired dresses by Claire Pettibone, alongside timeless classics with exquisite lace detail by Suzanne Neville, the sheer elegance and quality of Provonias and 1920's inspired collections by Sanyukta Shrestha. New accessories include Art Deco inspired headdresses by Miranda Templeton and Sasso. Susan said, "Lace is still evident on many vintage wedding dress creations and is perfect for the slimline elegance favoured by the more mature bride. Lace dresses continue to be hugely popular and corded lace is especially beautiful and loved by many of my brides".
Caroline Barnett of Wedding Elegance in Bridgwater, a Somerset stockist of Sottero and Midgley, visited Harrogate earlier this month and has sourced three new collections from Kenneth Winston, Private Label by G and Phoenix Gowns. Caroline said, "The three new labels offer my brides a great choice of beautiful dresses regardless of what they want to spend. The Private Label Collection by G offers beautiful dresses with optional matching boleros and some strapless style gowns have the option of adding lovely beaded straps. Phoenix Gowns are gorgeous well made dresses which offer exceptional value for money and with prices starting at £550 brides can have a fabulous gown without a fabulous price tag". Caroline is also excited by the new 2013 collection by Sottero and Midgley. She said, "The collection is everything brides expect from Maggie Sottero with beautiful styles in a range of fabrics included beaded lace, and prices start from £900 up to £1500."
Contact Susan at Parham House Brides on 01643 822298 and Caroline at Wedding Elegance on 01278 446634 for more details on the arrival of the new collections and to make an appointment to view.
Discounted wedding dresses are great for last minute weddings and can be available when the bridal shop is making way for new collections. These can often be bought that same day. For a list of south west bridal shops see The Dress List for details at www.wedding-whispers.co.uk/dressList.php

Wedding Costs - How much is enough?
Industry sources state that the average cost of a wedding in the UK has fallen to its lowest level since it peaked at over £20k in 2008 and is now estimated to be £15,541 (that includes £3k for a honeymoon)
You don't have to spend a fortune though to have the wedding you want, many get wed for much less than £10,000k and we have met brides who did it for £5K! The mere fact of contemplating a wedding with all its unknown and associated costs, can be enough to put the idea on hold and that would be a shame, but when we started Wedding Whispers in 2005 we knew then, as we do now, that many of you were getting wed for much less with the help of careful planning, family and friends and of course a bit of guidance from Wedding Whispers! So we know that you can have the day you want without breaking the bank.
As couples get savvy with their cash, it is often not always discounts they are looking for, but a bit of guidance, a few tips and hints on what to do, and what is the 'norm' these days? The truth is anything goes these days and we have found that there's no set figure and it's a question of priorities, but as most couples now pay for their own wedding it can be useful to know how the costs can stack up and what you can do about it.
The vast majority of the cost of a wedding is spent on food and drink and the hire of the wedding venue, though not all venues charge room hire. The easiest areas to cut costs are to reduce the number of guests, get married midweek and take advantage of late deals offered by UK wedding venues, or to become a DIY Bride and hire a village or church hall for next to nothing and do it (well most of it) yourself! There are simple areas where savings can be made, and no-one need even notice!

Planning a Guest List
The guest list is a dilemma; deciding who to invite from the respective families and friends is a common problem for many couples. If there is a large family on both sides, the number of friends may have to be reduced, however when the couple are paying for their own wedding, they may prefer to have more friends than family especially when these have not been seen since childhood. The number of guests you plan to have will influence the choice of venue and can mean that the country house you had in mind is no longer suitable. It is fine to ask friends to the evening reception instead and limit the day to family and close friends. You should not however ask guests to the wedding ceremony and not to the reception afterwards.
If costs are an important factor and mostly they are, we suggest that you start with a per head figure of £50 and work up or down from this. Include anything that has to be ordered for each guest such as food, welcome drinks and canapes, table settings (if you need to hire these in) and chair covers. Most venues and caterers work on a cost per head for these items though some venues offer all inclusive packages based on a set number of guests. This will give you an idea of costs and if money is tight, will define your priority guest list. A back up list can be used when the priority guests cannot attend. Send out invitations at least 8 weeks before so you have time to finalise the numbers and invite guests on your back up list. Emailing a wedding invitation is not appropriate and neither is listing it as an event on Facebook!
A neat idea to cut catering costs, is to have the ceremony later in the day with one large forked buffet where everyone can be invited. See more ideas here. Planning a wedding in modern times can be helped by the definitive guide to modern wedding etiquette at Debrett's Wedding Guide.

Shopping for your Dress!
Shopping for your wedding dress is now so much easier with Wedding Whispers. For some time now we have led the way by listing the price range and bridal collections for each of the bridal shops featured in our wedding service directory. Brides worry about the dress more than anything else and don't want to try on a dress that is outside their budget. So shop with confidence and consult the price and collection guide for each shop on page 4 of the spring issue. You can research the bridal collections for each store online but the prices for the dresses aren't usually shown, unless the dress is a sale item, so consult our guide and head for the right shop! To find out more just visit our featured bridal shops in the wedding service directory or get the information on page 4 of the new spring issue of Wedding Whispers online. It's so much easier with Wedding Whispers!

The new season unveiled
Last month the new season bridal collections were unveiled at the Harrogate International Bridal Show. The Somerset bridal shops were were there catching up with the new trends and selecting styles to show to their brides for the coming season. Every bridal shop has its own style and experience so the collections they choose will reflect this. Wedding Whispers went along to see just what all the fuss was about and what goes on behind the scenes. In the autumn winter issue, we'll be revealing what the bridal shops in Somerset decided to stock and why. It's all in the new issue of Wedding Whispers which will be out and online shortly.

Tried and Tested!
If you are looking for something fun and a bit different for a girly/hen weekend get together or a thank you for a hardworking bridesmaid or Mum, have a go at a cup cake workshop at Poppy Greens. I paid them a visit at the weekend and came away with a new set of cake decorating skills that I didn't know I had and some very pretty cup cakes. A very well organised and productive morning in Lesley's scrumptious cottage in Meare near Glastonbury. We'll be featuring more about this in the autumn winter issue of Wedding Whispers, but in the meantime you can see my cup cake creations here To find out more about Lesley's cup cake workshops go to her website www.poppygreens.co.uk. Wedding cup cakes are on trend at the moment and this workshop will equip you with the skills to make your own like a pro!

Shopping for your Wedding Dress.
There's been a lot of fuss in the media recently about some bridal shops charging for appointments to try on wedding dresses, as much as £25 in some cases. There's several reasons for this; some bridal shops charge to qualify their potential clients, do it to reduce time spent with ladies who are just wanting to look, to avoid no shows on busy days, or to ensure that the client does not go elsewhere. It is usual for a bride to be to visit a few shops before the decision on the right dress is made, so it could be an expensive shopping trip if all shops charged. The charge is though often refunded against a sale. Shopping for your wedding dress is a time consuming process but one to be enjoyed. None of the bridal shops featured in Wedding Whispers operates a charging policy for appointments and some provide the comfort of convenient evening time slots for brides to be that work during the day. We know the bridal shops like to give you a personal service and individual attention and most will prefer you to make an appointment. It is after all a pleasure you won't want to rush! Ask the shop how long you will need and we suggest that you limit the number of shops you visit in a day so you don't rush what should be an enjoyable experience. But if you must see several shops on the same day, go on a day other than a Saturday. To find a bridal shop, the collections they stock plus a price guide for each shop, see the featured list on Wedding Whispers here

Wedding Bells in Wells
We like to keep in touch with the bridal services we feature on the Wedding Whispers website and magazine and also love to see to visit the services in action! So last weekend we were in Wells, in beautiful Somerset and dropped in to see Jo Christoforides in her new shop on the High Street. There is always something lovely to see in Jo's shop and on Saturday there was a gorgeous bespoke gown on Jo's workstation in the early stages of creation. Jo is one of Somerset's leading bridal designers, has more than 25 years experience in the business and is still being commissioned for individually designed bespoke gowns. Also in store, are collections by Ritva Westensius, Charlotte Balbier and Jenny Packham. To find out more about Jo's shop on the High Steet in Wells and about all the collections in store, visit her website at www.jochristoforides.co.uk or just call into the shop.
We then wandered up to the Swan Hotel on Sadler Street to try their lunch menu and their tranquil new front garden overlooking the Cathredral Green and right in the heart of the town. It was all so civilised! the service was excellent and so was the food. The Swan Hotel are able to hold the marriage ceremony and have very pleasant facilities for your daytime and evening function. Find out more about the Swan Hotel Wells on their website www.swanhotelwells.co.uk Almost next door (so very handy if you are getting married at the Swan Hotel) is Eric Purchase Photography. The business is over 30 years old and the photographic studio is now managed by Debbie, a capable and professional wedding photographer with an excellent reputation. Tea at Poppy Greens
Like most women I love afternoon tea and at the moment Poppy Greens is the place to go. Tea is served in pretty vintage china cups with one or two! rather scrumptious cup cakes. Last time I dropped by, Lesley had been experimenting with some new shortbread biscuit shapes decorated with sugar flowers and icing. They were a huge hit at the Powderham Castle Show in Devon last weekend and where brides confirmed my view that the biscuits made ideal little table gifts for wedding guests. Don't just take our word for it though, go and have a look for yourself at www.poppygreens.co.uk or see Poppy Greens in the main hall at The Wedding and Fine Events Show on 27th and 28th March 2010 at the Royal Bath and West Showground. PS the biscuits were rather nice!

Making a Start
Your wedding is this year and you are too busy to even think about it or you've done the show rounds, gone home with all the goody bags but still don't know where to start. We know all this because we've had years of experience just talking to brides and grooms to be. We talk, you do the planning! Unlike most wedding magazines, we are actually out there on a Sunday talking to couples at shows, finding out about their own wedding experiences and pointing them in the right direction. Last Sunday we were at the 'excellent' Marriott Hotel on College Green, Bristol and one bride to be was worrying about when she should order her wedding dress for this summer!!? Lead times will vary depending on the label but 16 to 20 weeks is about right but do allow time and additional money for dress fittings. If you have left it a bit late don't worry we have a list of bridal shops where you can try and buy your dress off the rail at a substantial discount. For 2010 collections, find a shop from our list here.
Whilst we were talking! nearly all the remaining copies of the Wedding Whispers autumn winter issue were snapped up, along with lots of money off tickets for the Wedding and Fine Events Show in March. You can buy your tickets now and there is a buy one get one free ticket offer on the show website. The next issue of Wedding Whispers will feature the show which is the only 2 day event in Somerset and will include some special offers and discounts from some of the exhibitors. You'll soon be able to read the spring 2010 issue of Wedding Whispers online and you can now order back issues of Wedding Whispers when you visit the archive here.
